Chapter 25
Wagast noticed that heâd begun to feel old. That made sense, given that he indeed was old, but he felt even older than usual as he opened the door to the tower in Dilara and stepped inside. The smells of dinner perked him up a bit, as did Yoncaâs peck on his cheek.
âHowâs my wizard trainer this evening?â she asked.
âSome of them are a bloody disaster,â Wagast said. âLiterally, in one case.â
âOh, my. What happened?â
âOne of the new apprentices formed an excellent fireball. Small, but hot.â
âThat sounds good,â Yonca said. âIsnât it?â
âOnly trouble was that he formed it and shot it into another apprenticeâs leg. Had to heal the poor boy on the spot.â Wagast sighed, sat down at the table.
âWe all start somewhere,â Yonca observed.
âTrue, but we used to start one at a time with direct supervision. Now that theyâre trying to start as a clump ⦠I donât know.â
Yonca gave him a look. âWe have accepted the challenge of swelling the ranks of Dilaraâs wizards. We sent representatives out into the community to raise our profile. Now itâs working and youâre moaning about it?â
âIâll have you know,â Wagast said, sitting up straight, âThat is precisely what Iâm doing.â
Yonca gave a little snort. She was quiet a moment. âAnd the queen?â
Wagast sighed again. âShe will recover,â
âHow soon?â
Wagast shrugged. âThe arrow pierced her heart. Had I not been standing right there to give her a potion she would have died before she had time to fall.â
âWe are going to need her,â Yonca said.
Wagast looked up. âYou know something?â
Yonca shook her head. âI donât know, but I can guess.â
Wagast frowned. âHow long do we have?â
âA year, perhaps less. It depends how far that fool Gerent Ormuz goes.â
Wagast grunted. It wasnât enough time to properly train even a handful of wizards. He needed an army of them.
âI worry that war will come soon and our king will be too busy being concerned about his wounded wife to lead us,â Yonca said.
âThat worries me too,â Wagast said. âBut she can only heal as fast as she can heal. Apprentices can only learn as fast as they can learn.â
Yonca sat at the table with a couple of bowls of soup that smelled positively delicious. âWell,â she said. âAt least two old wizards can still have a bite to eat before bed.â
Wagast smiled. âTrue enough.â
